ARNAO MINING MUSEUM (MUSEO DE LA MINA DE ARNAO)

The Arnao mine is one of the most important industrial history sites in Spain. It was the first carbon mine exploited on the Iberian Peninsula in 1593 and is where the oldest railway in Spain was built. It houses one of the last wooden headframes of the 19th century and the oldest of Asturian carbon mining. It's also the only underwater mine in continental Europe.
At the Arnao Mining Museum you’ll discover the fascinating history of the first carbon miners, enjoy its privileged location on the sea and go down the mine's original headframe and pit, inside the cliffs. Once underground, you’ll go for a walk in the shoes of the men, women and children that worked inside the galleries in the 19th century and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about their life and shocking experiences.
The Mining Museum also offers daily, guided tours through the town of Arnao, the first workers town constructed in Asturias. They also offer other cultural and leisure activities (workshops, concerts, presentations, special descents with original, primitive illumination, other itineraries, etc).

GAUZON CASTLE (EL CASTILLO DEL GAUZÓN): A TRIP TO THE MIDDLE AGES

The Gauzon castle is one of the most important archaeological sites of the middle ages in northern Spain. Research promoted by the council of Castrillon identified this first fortress of the Hispanic-Visigoth period from the 6th-7th centuries A.D. The kings of Asturias transformed the settlement, converting it into their most famous castle. During its peak of splendour in the 8th to 10th centuries A.D., enormous towers and a palace with a church were built. This was the temporary residence of the monarchy and the main coastal defence against Viking invasion. The Victory Cross was made inside its walls in the year 908 and the castle was abandoned in the 14th century.
During summer months you can tour the castle and observe the archaeological excavations being carried out by the research teams, all while discovering how the primitive kings lived inside their oldest castles. Cultural activities of a promotional nature are also held there (workshops, concerts, historical recreations).

VALEY: CULTURAL CENTRE OF CASTRILLON

Its cultural programming offers performing arts, music, film, exhibitions and other manifestations of contemporary creation. It’s home to an auditorium theatre, conference rooms, the Tourism and Festivals Office, a youth room, a play centre, a digital resources centre, a multipurpose room and exhibition halls, which are accessible to everyone.

NIEMEYER CENTRE

It’s the only work by architect Oscar Niemeyer in Spain and the architect himself considers it as his most important and loved work outside Brazil.
The Niemeyer Centre is an open door for all forms of art and cultural manifestations. Music, cinema, theatre, dance, exhibitions, gastronomy and words themselves are the protagonists of multidisciplinary cultural programming with excellence as the single common denominator.
The centre was born to be a point of reference in Ibero-American cultural management and a bridge between the two continents. That is why it’s considered as a magnet, not only for talent, knowledge and creativity but also as a door that opens Asturias to the world.
The cultural complex consists of five independent pieces that complement each other: the square, auditorium, dome, tower and multipurpose building.

CUDILLERO

Also known as Villa Pixueta, this old, traditional fishing town is one with nature. The town is laid out in a very curious way; the colourful houses are built into the cliffs, creating brightly coloured urban terraces. And don't miss its beautiful fishing port and precious beaches, such as Aguilar or Silencio beach.
